Casting Call Once Around the Sun Written by Judy Upton Directed by Olivia Biddleston-Dawe Hello lovely actors, We are RED Theatre Company Ltd & we’re collaborating with award winning British playwright Judy Upton.
Judy’s work includes credits with the BBC & several London theatre residences. Once Around the Sun is a new project produced by RED Theatre Company Ltd, an East 15 graduate company & winners of the University of Essex Graduate award 2018. The casting is for an R&D / backers audition in January (date TBC). Our aim is to then perform a run in a London theatre with potential to extend, dependant on funding.
Pay: Travel expenses will be covered for rehearsals & the R&D. We have a production meeting on Sunday 20th October (evening, time TBC) where travel & drinks will be covered. Actors who are in the R&D will be given the first opportunity to be in the show when it goes into production, where this will be paid.
THE PLAY It’s the first anniversary of a terrorist bomb blast that destroyed a café on a London terminus station. Several people were killed. The police still have no answers regarding suspects. Since, the café has been rebuilt & colleagues Carla & Sergei are the only 2 that have turned up for work this evening. They have a few customers come in & all of the characters memories flood back in the form of conversations from their pasts – unfinished business.
The barriers between customers & staff break down and painful, disturbing and liberating truths are discovered as emotions start to run dangerously high. Sergei (m, 20’s/30’s, Russian/Eastern European, Chef) Sergei is easy going, good humoured & philosophical. On the surface he is calm and sure of himself, but in reality, he is in denial about his sexuality.
We would like to cast actors who are of the heritage given in the description. Lilia (f, 20’s, Middle Eastern/Pakistani, Customer) Lilia’s husband (an English soldier) had been killed in the cafe the night of the attack. She is Muslim & wears a Hijab, she is very open but has experienced animosity toward her marriage to Jon. She is kind natured, smart & inquisitive.
We would like to cast actors who are of the heritage given in the description, we are extremely keen to hear from actors who wear the hijab. Please email with a short covering letter & link to your Spotlight or Mandy profile and your availability for the Sunday 20th meeting. We look forward to hearing from you!
